Inhalt

IWie alle Jahre fahren die Geschwister Tamara, Elisabeth und Ingmar mit ihren Partnern und Kindern zu ihren Eltern, um gemeinsam Weihnachten zu feiern. Wie alle Jahre endet schon das erste Treffen am Abend des 23. Dezember in unerfreulichen Diskussionen und Streit. Besonders Tamara benimmt sich auch beim Frühstück im Hotel am nächsten Morgen eigenartig und auch über den Ablauf der Bescherung am Abend gibt es unterschiedliche Meinungen. So machen sich Tamara, Elisabeth und Ingmar ohne ihre Familien auf den Weg zum Haus ihrer Eltern, um in einem gemeinsamen Gespräch zu versuchen, Lösungen zu finden, wie früher. Doch als sie klingeln, öffnet niemand. Die Eltern sind verschwunden und das wenige Stunden von der geplanten Weihnachtsfeier im Familienkreis.

Thema und Genre

In diesem Roman geht es um Familie, um die unterschiedlichen Wege, die Geschwister gehen, wenn sie erwachsen sind. Ein wichtiges Thema sind die Konflikte, die aus dem gesellschaftlichen Zwang von weihnachtlichen Familienfeiern entstehen.

Charaktere

Tamara, Elisabeth und Ingmar sind Geschwister, die sich als Erwachsene voneinander entfernt haben. Die Enttäuschung darüber führt zu Streit, in den auch die jeweiligen Partner und Kinder mit einbezogen werden. Es sind Figuren von nervig bis unangenehm, die sich familiär verpflichtet fühlen, das Fest gemeinsam zu feiern. Besonders Tamara ist eine zutiefst unsympathische Protagonistin. Vielleicht müsste man Geschwister haben, um diese Geschichte besser nachvollziehen zu können, aber eine Schwester wie Tamara, danke nein.

Handlung und Schreibstil

Der Handlungszeitraum umfasst nur zwei Tage, den 23. und 24. Dezember. Rückblenden und Kindheitserinnerungen ergänzen die aktuellen Ereignisse. Der Roman ist in insgesamt sieben Kapitel eingeteilt und die Autorin wählt die personale Erzählform, wobei sie die Sichtweise öfter wechselt.

Fazit

Die „magische Botschaft“, von der auf dem Klappentext die Rede ist, konnte ich in diesem Roman nicht finden. Wenn man es sich mit einer stimmungsvollen Lektüre für die Vorweihnachtszeit gemütlich machen will, ist dieses Buch die falsche Wahl.

Theme and Genre

This book is part a specific biography of Charles Dickens, part a historical overview about live conditions in London around the middle of the 19th century. It also gives a detailed description and complete overview of literature, writing and of publishing during those times, between family enterprises and booksellers who began to set up the whole production process of their books.

But most of all this is the loveable story about one of the most wonderful Christmas books, “A Christmas Carol”, about the idea behind the ghostly story, the realization and what Dickens wanted to tell his readers. He wanted to touch them, making them laugh and cry at the same time and to re-new the Christmas spirit. Which he does until today.

Conclusion

A non-fiction story, written in a poetic prose, as delightful to read as the original story. A book for everybody who knows values and loves the Seasonal Writings of Charles Dickens.

Inhalt

Seit vierzehn Jahren gibt es nun Harbliebs Buchhandlungen in Wien Währing und Wien Alsergrund. Dies sind auch vierzehn Mal Hochbetrieb in der gar nicht stillen Vorweihnachtszeit und vierzehn Mal erschöpftes, aber erleichtertes Aufatmen so gegen 13 Uhr am 24. Dezember. Da sammeln sich viele Geschichten, Gschichterln und Erlebnisse an und davon handelt dieses Buch.

Personen, Orte und alles Drumherum

Hauptprotagonistin ist natürlich die Buchhandlung selbst, die in diesen Wochen aus allen Nähten platzt und dazu kommen alle Beteiligten, die sich beinahe rund um die Uhr bemühen, dass genau das nicht passiert, sondern dass alles funktioniert. Improvisation ist gefragt, vor allem aber die Liebe zu Büchern und genau darum geht in diesem Buch. Von fragmentarischen Kundenwünschen, die dennoch erkannt werden, von einem eingespielten Team und von Freundschaft, darüber erzählen die einzelnen Episoden.

Der Autorin geht es weniger um eine chronologische Handlung, sondern um die Erlebnisse und Erfahrungen in diesen Jahren, erzählt in einzelnen kurzen Episoden und mit viel Humor. Hier ist jemand, der noch immer den Traum lebt, realistisch, mit allen Höhen und Tiefen, und daher ist es auch keine überzuckerte Romantik, die den Leser hier erwartet.

Fazit

„Ich mag keine Buchhändlerinnen, die ständig jammern“, schreibt die Autorin auf Seite 105, aber genau das findet in den ersten Kapiteln des Buches ziemlich intensiv statt. Dann jedoch gewinnen die Geschichten an Intensität, Humor und damit Leichtigkeit. Andererseits ist es gerade diese Offenheit und ehrliche Realität, die den Leser überzeugt. Hier wird der in unseren lesebegeisterten Köpfen verklärte Beruf der Buchhändlerin entzaubert, ohne jedoch den wirklichen Zauber, nämlich die Liebe zu Büchern und zu Buchhandlungen, zu verlieren.

Ivy is a children’s books illustrator who has moved together with her husband Stuart from London back to Cornwall, where she grew up. Now that she finally is pregnant she misses her mother, who had died five years ago, even more. When she gets her mother’s desk for her studio, she finds one of her mother’s beautiful Christmas cards, unfinished, a card, Ivy had seen never before.It is going to be Christmas at Sea Cottage, their new home,  and magic is in the air.

Theme and Genre

This is a romantic, heartwarming Christmas story about the strong ties between mothers and their daughters. It is also about friedship and beautiful Cornwall.

Characters

Ivy  Stuart is still missing her mother, but  now that she knows that she will soon be a mother, things have changed and she feels really happy. There too are her friends and the nice old ladies, close friends of her mother. Cloudsea has charming, enjoyable Cornish characters who welcome the reader.

Plot and Writing

A beautifully written, magical story, not only about Christmas, but about life and new chances. It takes place in a Cornish village with beach walks, but also stormy Winter days. The story is told by Ivy, wtitten in the first person.

Conclusion

A magical, romantic book, that takes the reader to a cosy Cornish village. A perfect Christmas read that will make you laugh and cry, but it’s the uplifting feelings that will remain with a smile on your face.

Content and Theme

Merry Knight works as a temp for Matterson Consulting, just twelve month to earn money to finish her studies at the college. Beeing it December, her work there is almost over. So her mother and brother Patrick are sure that it is time to do something for her social live and as a birthday present for Merry they set up her profile at Mix & Mingle, a famous dating platform. The put in “Smith” instead of Knight and a foto of their dog Bogie.

Jayson Bright, vice president of the company she is working for might be, as the other women say, good-locking, but he never seems to smile, sticks to the employee handbook for lots of rules and is under extreme pressure preparing a very important contract with Boeing, scheduled still before Christmas. But when his cousin and best friend fiends the love of his life through Mix & Mingle, he is just curious, logs on the dating site, searching for women in the aerea – and finds the foto of a dog, a golden retriver like his childhood friend Rocky …

Debbie Macomber knows how to write romance. Merry and Jayson are both likeable characters, but still remain realistic. This book is about family, about caring for each other and about the spirit of Christmas- and about two people who need time to see what is just in front of their noses.

Conclusion

An entertaining, cosy and enjoyable read for comfortable hours in the time around Christmas, where readers are ready for some dreaming and romance, happy-ending included.

Content and Theme

This book is a collection of the famous author´s letters he wrote to his children as Father Christmas from the North Pole. Every year´s letter tells stories about how Father Christmas, together with his assistant Polar Bear, prepares everything for Christmas, but also about their helpers, the Elves, and the troubles they have with the bad Goblins that try to steal all the presents. Each letter tells about adventures and funny troubles, especially connected with Polar Bear.

The Book includes photos of the original written letters, envelopes and the beautiful drawings that were sent together with the letters.

From 1939 until 1943 Father Christmas also writes about the war and low storages because of the war, explaining that he could not get everything the the children´s wishlists worldwide.

Conclusion

This is a book for children, to be read by the parents to the smaller children and will sure be read by the children themselves as soon as they can read. But also adults will really enjoy the stories and the illustrations. The perfect read to shorten the days before Christmas.

Theme and Genre

Generally, the story is about friendship, mistakes and how to keep a secret – or to share it with the partner at any cost.

Plot

Jenny Colgan is one of my favorite authors for “very british, cosy” and I love her series such as these stories about the Cornish bakery and Polly Waterford, the gifted, creative baker. But in this third book about the Little Beach Street Bakery are so many pages about Polly, who this time around Christmas seems to be quite unable to make her own decisions, somewhat sliding between Yes and No – this is not the protagonist Polly as known the former two books. Huckle too begins to act more like a teenager than a grown up. This altogether lenghtens the plot.

Conclusion

It was a nice read and I nevertheless would recommend it to all fans of Jenny Colgan, and as cosy Christmas read to all readers who love to cuddle up with an enjoyable story, tea and biscuits, on dark afternoons.

Inhalt

Nach dem Tod seiner Frau verbannt Carl-Johann Gustafsson, ein alter, erfolgreicher und begüterter Kunsthändler, ein weihnachtliches Ölgemälde aus der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts auf den Dachboden. Auch er selbst lebt sehr zurückgezogen auf seinem großen Landgut. Nach zehn Jahren jedoch holt sein Hausdiener Alfred das Gemälde vom Dachboden und Carl-Johann Gustafsson findet es an der Zeit, Weihnachten wieder mit der Familie, Kinder, Enkel, Urenkel zu verbringen. Doch der Weihnachtsfriede scheint weit entfernt, da bei seinen Söhnen und deren Ehefrauen nicht das Familienfest im Vordergrund steht, sondern der Hintergrundgedanke an mögliche Auswirkungen der Feier auf das Erbe. Wird es helfen, dass plötzlich sogar zwei, statt einem Weihnachtsbaum im Esszimmer stehen? Kann es für diese Familie noch ein Weihnachtswunder geben?

Thema und Genre

Eine Geschichte, in der es um den Sinn von Weihnachten geht und um die Familie.

Charaktere

Mein Lieblingscharakter ist Susanna, die ihren Großvater versteht und versucht, die Geschehnisse in eine friedliche Bahn zu lenken. Susanna, die Malerin am Beginn einer möglichen Karriere als Künstlerin, interessiert sich nicht für mögliche Anteile am Erbe, sondern wünscht sich ein fröhliches Weihnachtsfest, wie jene sorglosen Weihnachtstage ihrer Kindheit auf dem Landgut.

Handlung und Schreibstil

Eine schwedische Weihnachtsgeschichte nennt der Autor diese Erzählung über eine Familie, deren Mitglieder im Bemühen, sich selbst perfekt zu präsentieren, beinahe den Sinn von Weihnachten, ein fröhliches Zusammenkommen im Familienkreis, übersehen. Das Buch beginnt mit einem Prolog und endet mit einem Epilog, das eigentliche Geschehen reicht in Kapiteln vom 22. Dezember bis zum 25. Dezember. Auch wenn Lars Simon in bekannt humorvoller Art die einzelnen Protagonisten etwas überzeichnet, so bleibt ihr Verhalten doch durchaus im Bereich des Realen. Familienfehden an der festlichen Weihnachtstafel sind wohl zeitlos, wie das Fest selbst. Dennoch findet der Leser im Laufe der Handlung in jeder der Personen positive Eigenheiten, einige Verhaltensweisen haben ihre Wurzeln tief in der Vergangenheit und lösen sich nur langsam.

Fazit

Gustafssons Jul, ein liebevoll-dezent glitzernd gestaltetes kleines Buch vom dtv Verlag, ist eine zauberhafte Weihnachtsgeschichte und ich empfehle sie allen, die ein paar entspannte Lesestunden innerhalb des Trubels dieser Vorweihnachtstage genießen wollen. Das Nachwort des Autors lädt uns dann noch zum Nachdenken ein. Eine perfekte Einstimmung auf das Fest.
